Threats unknown This species appears to have undergone rapid, dramatic declines across Costa Rica, including disappearances within undisturbed habitat, which has been associated with chytridiomycosis as observed in many other montane, steam-associated species across Mesoamerica. Climate change or the synergistic effects of multiple factors could have played a role in the declines (Costa Rica Red List Assessment Workshop September 2019). The species is still being recorded at some sites, but in much lower numbers than historically. Major threats include habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change outside the national parks. The decline witnessed at Cerro Chompipe could be due to chytridiomycosis.
11 Over-collection from the wild Is the taxon suffering from collection within its natural range, either for food, for the pet trade or for any other reason, which threatens the species’ continued persistence in the wild? No / unlikely
12 Population recovery Is the known population of this species in the wild large enough to recover naturally, without ex situ intervention if threats are mitigated? Unknown Recent searches in Cerro Chompipe, a known historical locality that has not suffered much habitat modification, have not found this species. There have been no records at Cerro Chompipe in at least 10 years, despite many amphibian surveys (J. Abarca and Victor Acosta pers. comm. Sept 2019). The last known records of the species at Cerro de la Muerte are from 1995, there have been some surveys there but not at the exact site from where it is known to occur (Federico and Cachi pers. comm. Sept 2019). It was recorded in the Savegre Valley in 2013 (1 adult female) and 2015 (2 individuals) (J. Cossel pers. comm. Sept 2019). Surveys in recent years at Las Alturas have not reported the species (D. Gomez pers. comm. Sept 2019).
